The 9th edition of Avant Art Festival is starting. Keiji Haino and Balázs Pándi will open the event

Today, on October 3, the 9th edition of Avant Art Festival dedicated to Japanese art will start in Wrocław. This will be the most extensive presentation of Japanese avant-garde phenomena in music and art taking place in Poland this year. The opening concert will feature an outstanding duo: Keiji Haino and Balázs Pándi. On the upcoming days, we are going to see Phew, Ikue Mori, Group A, Ueno Masaaki, Kyoka, Aoki Takamasa and others. The performance stage will host the performances of Butoh theatre artists, and the Japanese edition of the Avant Art Film will be held at the New Horizons Art House Cinema and the Świebodzki Railway Station. The Polish scene will be represented by Zamilska, Kristen, Paweł Romańczuk and 2g. The festival will run until October 8.

The 9th edition of the AAF is a part of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 event programme.
Kicking off the event with Keiji Haino and Balázs Pándi.
Since the early 1970s, Keiji Haino, who comes from the theatre scene, inspired by the creations of Antonin Artaud, works with the space of psychedelic, improvised, minimalist, noise and drone music. Between 1973 and 2013 he was banned from broadcast by NHK – Japan’s public television. In that time, he was a part of projects such as Fushitsusha, Vajra and Nijiumu, and collaborated with Peter Brötzmann, Derek Bailey, Tatsuya Yoshida, Pan Sonic, Jim O’Rourke and others. After his performances with Stephen O’Malley (known from Sunn O))) and Zeitkratzer during AAF 2014, the Japanese experimental musician will join forces with Hungarian drummer, Balázs Pándi, who for a few years has been working with Merzbow. He also collaborated with Venetian Snares, Otto von Schirach, Justin Broadrick, Bill Laswell, Zu and Wadada Leo Smith. We are going to witness a clash of two vastly different concepts of improvisation.

Japanese avant-garde
After the opening concert, we are going to see the most prominent representatives of Japanese avant-garde and experimental music. Ikue Mori is a drummer, percussionist and graphic artist, who started her musical career in the late 1970s as part of the DNA project, connected to the New York’s No Wave environment, along with Arto Lindsay. She collaborated with experimental artists such as Fred Frith, John Zorn, Evan Parker and Maja S.K. Ratkje. Phew, one of the key figures of the first wave of the Japanese avant-new wave recorded her first album, released in 1981, with help from the members of krautrock band Can: Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit (who performed during the last year’s Avant Art Festival together with Hans-Joachim Irmler). The singer, who is also known for her collaboration with Otomo Yoshihide (AAF 2010), Bill Laswell and Dietrich Moebius, currently returns to the sparing, minimalist forms of expression. Apart from her solo performance, we will also have an opportunity to listen to her along with Alexander Hacke, known from Einstürzende Neubauten.

What is more, the festival will also feature a strong group of young artists, connected with the Raster-Noton label: from techno/glitch/IDM by Ueno Masaaki, through the twisted, yet delicate techno/dub by Kyoka, to electroidal, futuristic explorations of Aoki Takamasa. The laboratory cold of electronic research will be balanced by the performance of the classics: Shibuya-kei, Buffalo Daughter and the performance-musical Group A from Berlin, a project directly drawing upon the heritage of the classic industrial, such as SPK, Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire.

Polish techno, post-rock and experimental music
The programme also envisions the performances of Polish artists. Presenting on the stage of the Avant Art Festival will be Zamilska – a producer and composer of thick, fierce techno, we will also hear the plunder/electro/acoustic 2g, and the post-post rock Kristen from Szczecin, exploring the delicate states of balance between dissonance and silence. Moreover, continuing the trend of cooperation of Polish and foreign artists, started during the previous editions of the festival, the leader and founder of Małe Instrumenty, musicologist and a constructor Paweł Romańczuk will perform alongside Nao Nishihara, a Japanese performer and creator of installations, who explores the bodily aspect of creating and performing music in its spatial and sound function.

Butoh Theatre and Avant Art Film
The theatre stage will be a space for artists presenting the Butoh theatre in the full scope of its diversity: Aya Irizuki and Ken Mai. The fifth edition of Avant Art Film will present films about Japanese music. The phenomenon of “live houses” – underground clubs, where ideas guided by the principles of independence flow freely – is presented in a film directed by Kevin McGue. The documentary impression by Lewis Rapkin titled Live from Tokyo presents the expansive diversity of the music scene in the Japanese metropolis. Among the titles presented during this year’s review, we are also going to see the anarchic 2045: Carnival Folklore with live music, as well as a documentary about the life and art of the legendary outsider/lo-fi artist, Yximalloo.
