Program details

The ‘Wrocław — Backyard Door’ project is an element of the Visual Arts component of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 programme. The project consists of artistic interventions within the public space of the City of Wrocław, with an emphasis on its backyards — by which we mean large communal spaces usually enclosed by several townhouses or blocks of flats. All of the artistic activities were based on cooperation with the residents.

The project’s objective is to raise awareness amongst the Wroclaw inhabitants about their communal responsibility for “no man’s land” areas, which are often vacated and disregarded. Nevertheless, the space of Wroclaw’s yards is a precious common good.
The activities within the framework of “Wroclaw –entrance from the yard” aims to stimulate   Wroclaw’s inhabitants  engagement and  trigger their creative thinking  about the surrounding  environment , as well as enable them to meet and cooperate with artists.  Moreover, the artistic interventions draw attention to problems of local inhabitants and infrastructure shortcomings. 
The activities with the participation of artists were preceded by a research done in several yards by a team of Wroclaw sociologists.  On the basis of the research, the team delivered a “report“, which also serves as a good practice guide for participatory activities. The report can be accessed on free of charge basis on ESK website.
All activities henceforth planned by artists will be accompanied by animations, however artistic interventions will be created in cooperation with the inhabitants and require their acceptance and permission.  The format used for the accompanied animations will depend each time on the place, as well as its character and individual needs of the inhabitants.

Kozanów - In Search for the Miraculous

Kozanów - In Search for the Miraculous, is an interdisciplinary artistic event presented within the  ‘Wrocław — Backyard Door’ as part of the Visual Arts component of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 programme.  Its main element is an international group exhibition situated in the Kozanów neighbourhood and its surroundings, which is accompanied by performances, films and discussions. In their site-specific works, as well as interactive activities with the inhabitants of the area, the invited artists from different European countries refer both to the history of this micro-region and to its every day reality. 

We chose the Kozanów neighbourhood for our activities because of two reasons: its interesting history up to the present, and minimal cultural offer. In Poland Kozanów is best-known for the usettling photos taken during the flood of the century in 1997, portraying colourful multi-storey blocks of flats standing in the water. Presently, apart from a senior’s club and a local library, there is only one culture club in the neighbourhood whose offer is directed basically to children.  

Kozanów - In Search for the Miraculous project is first of all intended for the inhabitants of the area, whom we wish to encourage to confront with artistic activities both directly - becoming the co-creators of the works, and indirectly – participating in discussions concerning the site-specific installations created by artists to be located especially in the neighbourhood.

The title of the project refers to a work by a Dutch artist – Bas Jan Ader, consisting in sailing the Atlantic in a small sailing boat, during which the artist perished, and his body was never found. The mystery of the unexplained cause of his disappearance and the optimistic vision of his artistic output became within the art world a kind of symbol of striving for a better future. Ader’s work title was in turn borrowed from a Russian spiritualist philosopher – Peter D. Ouspensky and his oeuvre „In Search of the Miraculous“ in which he encourages the reader to „wake up from“ the normality and strive towards a better life.

1. Artur Żmijewski (PL)

Title: Untitled

Venue: Kozanów neighbourhood / the square by Modra Street, seen from Pilczycka Street

 

In his project Artur Żmijewski will make use of found gravestones, abandoned nearby the Jewish cemetery, being most probably the remnants of the former public German cemetery located on both sides of Pilczycka Steet, in the area of the present Zachodni Park. 

This cemetery was turned into a park based on the instruction of the Ministry for the Recovered Territories issued in 1948, allowing the liquidation of the German cemeteries, excluding those classified as protected monuments, as part of the „de-Germanizing“ action. Found gravestones will be placed in the area next to the Zachodni Park in Kozanów, as a commemoration of the eliminated past of the city. This action however is not about whitewashing the history, but rather filling in the gaps. A few other considrably destroyed gravestones were treated by the artist as a sculpting material. Through his minor sculpting intervention he tries to bring back their meaning for our collective memory. The whole idea expressed by two „sculpting episodes“ – one being a monument, and the other pure craftsmanship, refers to the memory of the notions eliminated from the history of the city by the communist decree. Those notions commemorate the tragic history of the city and its inhabitants of different origin, and are shared by diverse nations.      

 

Artur Żmijewski – a Polish visual artist. Lives and works in Warsaw. In 1990’s he was one of the leading artists representing the critical art movement. He was preoccupied with the problems of the body and the Other. He closed this period by the manifest called „Applied social arts“ where he proposed a new formula of social engagement. 

In 2005 he represented Poland at the 51st Biennale in Venice. He is the art editor of the art magazine „Krytyka Polityczna“. In 2007 he published a collection of interviews with artists called „Drżące ciała“ [„Trembling bodies“]. In 2010 he was awarded the prestigious Ordway Prize granted by the Creative Link for the Arts and the New Museum in New York. In 2013 he was awarded the Jerzy Stajuda Prize for Art Criticism. He works with the Foksal Gallery Foundation.

 

2. Krzysztof Żwirblis (PL)

Title: Kozanów – social sculpture

Venue: Odra riverbank, between allotments and Milenijny Bridge

 

The project consists in building a sculpture-inscription with the help of the inhabitants. The social sculpture as an artistic medium, contains two equally important elements: the result of the action (in this case an inscription) and the process of its creation (being the collective work of the artist and the participants, by the usage of materials which had been prepared, collected and delivered by them).   

The point of departure for Żwirblis’s project are: the temporary architecture of the allotments located nearby the Odra River, their owners-creators, and the nature of materials used for their arrangement - the majority of which being re-used rubbish of the industrial production and consumption. The process of work on the project integrated the allotments’ owners with the inhabitants living in the houses surrounding a sport and recreation area in the middle of the neighbourhood. In order to achieve this, the artist organized a kind of workshop during which he worked on the sculpture with the participants, for example analyzing the function of the recycled material with reference to the meaning of the created inscription. The unveiling of the sculpture was accompanied by an opening with the participation of the inhabitants and all artists invited to the Kozanów project.

 

Krzysztof Żwirblis - an artist and a curator. Since 1976 he has been a member of the Akademia Ruchu experimental group which combines visual arts and theatre. He took part in more than 600 performances, street actions and presentations of the group. Between 1992-1997 he was the curator of the AR Gallery in the „Tęcza“ cinema theatre in Żoliborz, and between 2007-2012 he was the curator of Studio Gallery in Warsaw. Since mid-1990’s he has been running his own artistic practice, and since 2005 he has been especially concentrated on artistic actions with the participation of local communities stretched over a period of time (among them: "Tania telewizja" from 2005, "Bezinteresowna Przestrzeń Miejska" within 2007-2008, 2013, and "Muzeum społeczne" since 2010).

 

3. Jacek Niegoda (PL)

Title: CANAL      

Venue: Playground in front of the „Tradition of Wrocław’s Coat of Arms” Gymnasium no. 7 in Wrocław, Kolista Street 17

 

Jacek Niegoda’s project consists in building a recreational equipment made of modules in the children’s playground, which would acquire the shape of a canal – tunnel, comprising of several modules of standardized concrete rings used for building sewer channels. In his work the artist refers to a historical term „canal” which is very meaningful for the Polish culture. This word is directly associated by most of adult Poles with the film „Canal” by Andrzej Wajda. „Canal” is a sort of keyword opening a historical and national narration about the need to find a way out of a tragic situation, and to look for a miraculous rescue from hopeless chaos and loss. An innocent device for children’s amusement is at the same time a tool for forming a special kind of awareness, starting from a very young age. Passing through a sewer channel is like heading towards a lit exit, towards a clearly defined direction. And channelling entails programming actions and supressing anarchic freedom. Standardized concrete modules which form a structure of the sewer channel, are also a part of an existing larger system comprised of schools, neighbourhoods, cities and countries. The aim of all the elements of this network is to channel individual human activities and to endow them with desirable common directions. It happens with the help of organized games, education and also culture. The channelling happens through all forms of institutionalized artistic activities. Among them the European Capital of Culture whose aim – in the case of Wrocław – is to look for new forms and functions for the municipal social organization. Thus, the creation of all sorts of cultural policies is in fact the creation of structural frames which can be interpreted as channels. It might as well be said, that on the other end of this channel there is an idea whose aim is to cultivate the belief, that in order to get rid of the chaos and loss one should participate in emphasizing the historical and national narration synonymous of the aforementioned insurgent „Canal”. However, even a channel that leads to a happy beginning, is still a limitation of freedom. 

Jacek Niegoda – a Polish visual artist. Lives and works in Gdańsk. He is the author of videos, installations, objects, artistic actions and interventions in the public space. In his works he refers to the relations between power, technology and art. He participated in numerous group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.

 

4. Katarzyna Krakowiak (PL)
Title: The Chute

Venue: Skyscraper at Kozanowska Street 36

 

„The Chute” is a sound composition situated inside a no longer used system of rubbish removal, formerly installed in multi-storey buildings. Before they were finally isolated, the chutes had been intensively used, and the sound of the falling rubbish co-created the acoustic tale of the building. The sound of bottles falling down from the 5th floor is completely different from the sound of a pile of old newspapers falling down from the 11th floor. For hygienic reasons many chutes have been sealed. Due to this, a new separated empty space was created next to the walls of the inhabited apartments. In her project Katarzyna Krakowiak will bring sound to this void, and with the help of fabricated delicate sounds of nature, she will reach the interiors of the apartments. The subtle sound of nature, appearing every now and then, will gradually disappear falling down the chute, creating a new acoustic dimension of the concrete architecture of 1990’s.

 

Katarzyna Krakowiak - an audio-visual artist, a sculptor. Lives and works in Gdańsk and Warsaw. She creates architectural installations in which she makes use of the existing structure of the buildings. She is interested in the sound of architecture and public space. In 2012 she represented Poland at the Architecture Biennale in Venice where she was awarded a Special Mention. Her works were presented in group exhibitions in KUMU Museum (Tallin, 2011) and HMKV (Dortmund, 2011), to name but a few. Since 2011 she has been working in the City Interiors Design Studio (Faculty of Architecture and Design) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk together with Jacek Dominiczak.

 

5. Daniel Segerberg (SE)

Title: Under a make-believe tree

Venue: A meadow by the pond, next to the police station in Połbina Street

 

„Under a make-believe tree” is a social sculpture both with reference to the process of its creation, as well as to its final result. The artist, together with the inhabitants of Kozanów who will be interested in participating in the project, will create a tree-sculpture. The inhabitants can be involved in the action by contributing small donations like unwanted objects, or physical help in constructing benches, decorating the tree, or making and hanging chains made from materials found in the park nearby the installation. Close to the sculpture the artist will organize a small working station-workshop in order to create together a „fake” tree during the seven days of installation. This specific social sculpture will be functioning as a meeting point. On the benches arranged around it, the inhabitants will find a good place for a rest, a meal or a friendly chat.   

 

Daniel Segerberg - a Swedish artist living and working in Berlin. In his sculptures he uses found and restored materials. He creates multi-layered installations which seem to exist in a parallel world, and are reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic reality with an abandoned playground and a ferris wheel, where the only remnant of the industrial era are the leftovers of its products. From those leftovers he creates new functional objects-installations. He participated in many group exhibitions in Sweden, Germany, Russia and Denmark. He was a fellow of the Swedish IASPIS many a times.

 

6. Julita Wójcik (PL)

Title: A model of resistance against the Brownshirt wave

Venue: Gołężycka street by the playground

 

Wójcik’s work is based on the collective experience of the inhabitants of Kozanów - living on a floodplain, historically associated with the flood of the century from July 1997. Wójcik will encourage the local community to erect a wall made of sandbags on a hill in the middle of the neighbourhood. On the wall she will install a series of educational boards including a set of exercises how to hold one’s breath and how to prolong skip breathing before sinking under the water. In her work Wójcik, who is an experienced diver, uses her sporting skills. As part of the project, the inhabitants of Kozanów will meet an expert on flood protection systems from Wrocław, who will present a report on the present protection system status securing the area from the next possible flood.

 

Julita Wójcik - a Polish visual artist, a performer, an author of artistic actions, and a scuba-diver. Lives and works in Gdańsk. Her action „Peeling the potatoes“ from 2001 in Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw was widely commented by the media. So was her installation „Rainbow“ which was placed in the Zbawiciela Square in Warsaw in 2012. Julita Wójcik introduces to her art a very personal idiom, as well as very feminine. She reads social conventions and codes from her own perspective, and then she „domesticates“ them and uses them in her actions. They are often very mundane, typical for a „provincial girl“, as the artist puts it. Those simple actions become meaningful once they are introduced into an artistic context which ennobles them on the one hand, ridding the art of its elitist values on the other hand. In her works she resorts to interactive strategies. Wójcik has been very often awarded for her works both in Poland and abroad.

 

7. Jörg Herold (DE)

Title: Excavation – a shoe of an unnaturally big man

 

A documentary and archaeology project, consisting of an excavation in the allegedly last place of stay of the legendary Liczyrzepa.

Venue: a fragment of the coast with the view on the Milenijny Bridge

In his project the German artist continues his long-term artistic research on the history of Silesia as a mythical lost paradise. This project consists of both conceptual tactics of artistic activities concerned with the strategies of remembrance, as well as the artist’s individual experiences of experimenting with the image of a fantastic country where his family originated from, known only from stories. In his project the artist will be looking for a trace – the proof of the existence of the legendary hero –  Liczyrzepa, who was the ruler of the Karkonosze Massif and Lower Silesia. The aim of the work is to begin the discussion both about the mythologization of history, its modification, whitewashing or obscuring, as well as the rise, development and elapse of heroic attitudes. During his excavation works aiming at finding the remnants of Liczyrzepa, the artist will begin the discussion around such ambivalent subjects as: a hero, a superhuman, justice and divinity, as well as the notion of hope for a better future.  

 

Jörg Herold - one of the leading German visual artists. Lives and works in Leipzig. He’s interested in the mechanisms of the preservation and protection of memory, including the cultural memory. In his research he relies on both scientific resources and historical literature. Creating films, installations, drawings and paintings, he scrutinizes the imaginary and real places of remembrance. He calls himself a „documentary archaeologist”. In 1991 and 1995 he participated in the Sydney and Venice Biennale, and in 1997 he presented his works at documenta X. In 2003 he created the architectural project called „Lichtspur auf Dateline“ for the Bundestag in Berlin.

Title: < dienstag abend > no. 84

Venue: pillars on the beach under the Milenijny Bridge

 

The project proposed by a Viennese group of artists called < dienstag abend > (from German: Tuesday evening) materializes itself as a form of a sculpture which functions between an act of occupation and deregulation of public space. It is a site-specific intervention which problematizes the notions of form, function and values.   

“< dienstag abend > no. 84” is an installation in shape of a platform the size of 5m x 7m , covered with floor tiles. It will function as a flexible space which can take on various roles, such as a stage, an exhibition space, a dancefloor, a discussion forum, a bar, etc., without declaring any formal correlation with any of the purposes. The artists’ intention is to create a multifunctional space which will be formed according to its users’ will.

The proposed structure of the “< dienstag abend > no. 84” installation is just one part of the project, the second one being its usage and the assignment of functions and values. The platform will be equipped with props designed by artists, which will enable to transform it into a meeting place.

Even though the use of the platform is open to everybody and free from earlier imposed rules, in order to interest the local community, the artists came up with a special invitation for them. “< dienstag abend > no. 84” is on the one hand an invasion from the outside onto a given space and a creation of a strange sculpting element in it, which will be appropriated by someone else. On the other hand, we can observe a process of losing control over the forms of use of the original construction.

 

< dienstag abend > is a Viennese artistic collective formed in 2009 by Ludwig Kittinger and Fernando Mesquita. In 2015 Ana de Almeida, Sophie Thun and Dorota Walentynowicz joined in.

The grounds for < dienstag abend > is a situation which is respectively formed by artists and local communities, adjusted to group mechanisms. The events themselves organized by the collective are triggered by the idea of heterarchy, without mediations between the artists and the public, so as to achieve the most direct effect. The collective works both in Vienna, and in other European countries. 

 

9. Dominika Skutnik (PL)

Tytuł: GEODE

Venue: a selected concrete object in the area of the old harbour by the Orbita Hall

 

The project consists in building in/incorporating a geode made of a semi-precious stone – amethyst, into a concrete object by the dock of a former barge harbour on the Odra River. Geode is a hollow space of a rock filled with mineral matter. It is created as an effect of the crystallization of mineral matter in a hollow, empty space of rocks. Goedes often take an oval form. On the walls of their circular shell, firstly concentric layers are formed, followed by brushes of crystals directed to the centre of the geode with their endings. Geodes are formed most often in the volcanic rocks, when a gas bubble gets stuck in the cooling lava. In her work the artist transfers the precious composition of nature into the postindustrial environment. She treated the ferroconcrete object belonging to the former harbour as an artificial rock. The juxtaposition of the natural form of the geode with a ruined remnant of a concrete construction is a clear intervention into a depressive postindustrial climate of the area of the former harbour, strongly emphasising the contrast between the coarse and the noble, the useful and the redundant, the cheap and the precious.

 

Dominika Skutnik - a Polish visual artist, a painter. Lives and works in Gdańsk. In her projects – installations and sculptures, she uses ready-made objects. She is interested in the exchange of energies between the work of art and the audience, as well as the direct (as opposed to metaphorical or symbolic) creation of emotional states in the audience being in contact with art. Formally she alludes to the objects and ritual spaces of different cultures. She has had many solo exhibitions in Poland. She also participated in numerous exhibitions abroad, ex. in Finland, Germany, France and the UK, to name but a few.

 

10. Merzedes Sturm-Lie (SE, BE, NO)

Title: Pirata

Venue: Odra River / Orbita Hotel

 

Performance description:

For five days Merzedes Sturm-Lie travelled in a little boat on the rivers and canals of Wrocław. The title of her performance, which seems to be a non-existing word for a female pirate in the Polish language, originates from the Latin word pirata, meaning a bandit, or the Greek expression πειρατής (peiratēs) originating from the verb πειράομαι (peiráomai) meaning „trying” or „undertaking”. In order to emphasize the character of this voyage, she marked her boat with the characteristic black flag.  

Wrocław is often called the Polish Venice as it was built on 12 islands. There are 100 bridges in the city, and the presence of rivers and canals not only plays an important role as far as its identity is concerned, but also determines the leisure activities of its inhabitants. During her water voyage Merzedes Sturm-Lie observed the underwater life of Wrocław’s rivers and canals, filming it with her waterproof camera fixed to the bottom of her boat. A camera installed on the boat itself also filmed everything that happened around the deck. Whereas, using the sound system, she played music from the boat, and talked to random passers-by on the land.

The collected video material together with the boat and the pirate flag became a sculpture/installation.

Merzedes Sturm-Lie - a Swedish-Norwegian visual artist, a performer, a scenographer, a curator. Lives and works in Stockholm and Brussels.

In her works she undertakes such subjects as: political correctness, death, dreams and life stagnation. In her performances she makes use of her voice and body as tools: she sings, talks and whispers. Her works have been presented at exhibitions in Sweden, Belgium, Japan, Brazil and Russia.

 

11. Kristina Müntzing (SE)

Title: The Promise

Venue: a fragment of the lawn in front of Wejherowska Street

 

In her work the artist used campaign posters from European countries found in the archives, picturing the transformation processes and the important turning points in the history of contemporary Europe. She listed the then electoral promises and verified which of them have been fulfilled, as well as what effect a given ideology has had on reality.

By presenting the eclectic set of campaign portraits the artist poses an important question: In what way do the authorities make use of and manipulate the slogans in order to achieve their political goals? Printed, devoid of any political slogans, and aesthetically transformed posters were presented in their reduced version containing only images. Müntzing retained their poster character though, so that they could become a possible space for the projection of different expectations. Her works aim at commenting the current political situation in Poland by comparing it to the realities of other countries and other times. The works are presented on a specially constructed large poster wall measuring 3 x 4,90 m, its total surface of  14 m² , which gives 21 posters the size of 70 x 100 cm.

 

Kristina Müntzing - a Swedish visual artist. She graduated from Goldsmiths College in London and M F A in Valand. She lived in different parts of the world: Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, and Tallin. She is currently the fellow of Künstlerhaus Bethanien and Kunst-Werke, living and working in Berlin. In her works she always reaches for subjects connected with her current place of stay. During her Berlin scholarship she is working on creating a pictorial language of radical political associations, and she is investigating the history of textile industry as an origin venue of the first socialist movements. She presented her works in: Arnstedt, Norrtälje Konsthall, Kiasma in Helsinki and Växjö Konsthall among others.

 

13. Dietmar Schmale (DE)

Title: „Paradise lost”

Venue: various places in Zachodni Park

 

The point of departure for Dietmar Schmale were the walks he took in Zachodni Park whose part overlaps with the former German cemetery, during which he noticed some characteristic objects: scattered empty alcohol bottles, as well as parts of clothing left on benches or in other places. The evident proof that the park is also a favourite meeting spot for alcohol fans.   

The empty bottles served as the basis for creating a light installation in the park. Stuck into the ground bottom up so that they cannot be destroyed, with the bottom painted with acrylic paint and endowed with phosphoric powder collecting the solar energy during the day, the bottles will become lit objects during the night. In this way a light installation has been created in the park, using the remaining elements after drunken parties, bringing to mind a group of overgrown fireflies or grave candles. 

Paradoxically, this installation is the most visible at night, when the majority of the inhabitants avoid going to the park. 

The addional resources of acrylic paint and phosphoric powder will be used during the educational activities. Regarding the fact that making the instalaltion is very easy, the organizers together with the inhabitants will create a path illuminating the passage along Grobla Kozanowska, between the Orbita sports centre, the Milenijny Bridge, and the Kozanów neighbourhood which unfortunately is not illuminated at night.

 

Dietmar Schmale - a German conceptual artist, a performer. He also creates under a pseudonym Do.Billig. Lives and works in Rheine. In one of his long-time performances in 2009 Schmale took on a role of a “Polish cleaning lady” and as its counterpart – a “German cleaning man” he worked for the lowest pay rate cleaning private apartments, clubs and institutions in Gdańsk/Poland. The documentation of this project entitled Restitution – kultureller Austausch / Restitution – the cultural exchange was presented in Gdańsk City Gallery. In his works Schmale makes use of different techniques, among them photography and ready-mades. He is the author of installations in public spaces and long-term performances.

 

14. Hubert Czerepok (PL)

Title: A part of the Polish identity

Venue: various sites in the area of the Kozanów neighbourhood

 

Concept:

Hubert Czerepok’s work alludes to the declaration made by the Polish government in 2015 with regards to accepting about 7500 refugees. In 2016 the new government reneged on the commitment, restricting both the number and professed religion.

Czerepok’s project consists in producing 7500 pieces of a symbolic refugee coin which would be a monetary sign of a non-existing country. This number directly corresponds with the number of refugees who were initially supposed to be accepted by our country.

The small coins will be „lost“ in the Kozanów neighbourhood. Surely, most of them will be found by the inhabitants and taken home, becoming an accidental and symbolic gesture of accepting a person who is seeking help. 

Huber Czerepok – a Polish visual artist. Lives and works in Wrocław and Szczecin. He creates drawings, paintings, art objects and installations, makes videos, animations and found footage films. He is also the author of multimedia projects and works in the public space. In his production he analyses constructions which determine particular human behaviour. He intervenes into spaces connected with controlling and uncovers their absurdities. He participated in numerous international group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.

 

15. Andrzej Dudek-Dürer (PL)

Title: Andrzej Dudek-Dürer – living sculpture

The work of Andrzej Dudek-Dürer (an artist from Wrocław) is a performance-installation.

Andrzej Dudek-Dürer believes in reincarnation. He is incarnation of Albrecht Dürer. Since 1969 he has been running his life performance „The Art of Boots – The Art of Trousers“. The artist has been using the same boots and trousers for 46 years. He repairs them regularly and documents them in different ways – through photography, graphics, drawing and video. „…Art for me is a way, a possibility, a special opportunity for self-realization, communication and cooperation… My Life is Art“. In Kozanów and the surrounding areas Dudek-Dürer takes regular walks, appears and reappears within specific or random times and days. Always registering his actions in various ways and from various perspectives. The author’s points of view comes from self-observation, self-filming and the registration of the surrounding. The position of the viewer entails either conscious or unconscious participation in a performance. The created and edited video and photo material will be presented to the public and participants. The important aspect of the whole action is the sound – recorded on the filmed spots and consecutively transformed into new qualities and values.

 

Andrzej Dudek-Dürer - a performer, a media artist, a composer, a musician. Lives and works in Wrocław. His pseudonym comes from Albrecht Dürer – Dudek believes he is his incarnation. He creates installations, videos, graphic arts, painting, photography, sculpture, environement, metaphysical instruments, he explores the metaphysical and the telepathic, anti-poetry, as well as other forms of artistic statements.

16. Michał Węgrzyn (PL)

Title: Concrete

Venue: the ruins of a concrete silo by the former barge harbour

During the opening Michał Węgrzyn will present a series of photographic and painted collages in a form of large-scale projections on the facade of the former concrete silo by the harbour. In order to make them, he will incorporate the photos taken in the Kozanów neighbourhood, the archive materials of the city of Wrocław and his painting impressions. His works directly relate to the everyday life of the area in which they will be projected, with the view to its history as well.

 

Michał Węgrzyn - a graduate of the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. Lives and works in Wrocław. He worked with the Gdańsk School of Mural with Rafał Roskowiński and Jacek Zdybel of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Within this cooperation he took part in group works as well as created his own mural devoted to the 70th anniversary of the National Armed Forces. In 2013 he was awarded the 1st prize in an international competition for the design and realization of a mural entitled „Brama Nadodrza“ [the Gate of Nadodrze] (a revitalized neighbourhood of Wrocław). In the same year he was granted the art scholarship of the president of Wrocław. Currently, besides traditional painting, he also makes spatial installations based on his own abstract works.

 

17. Saperki (PL)

Title: Miracle at the Odra

The opening performance / Miracle at the Odra, relates on the one hand to the historical event called the Miracle at the Wisła, but on the other hand to a biblical story of transforming water into wine at the Wedding at Cana. During the opening the group of artists – Saperki – will perform a miracle of changing wine into water. This miracle is only possible in the course of a group work and requires a lot of physical effort from the artists. The automatic wine pouring becomes a physical exercise. The process of mixing water with wine lasts until the taste of wine and its alcoholic qualities turn into water. Additionally, in order to make the miracle happen, Saperki created a miraculous entourage – a mermaid recital by Maria Syrena [Mermaid] Bitka to the percussion accompaniment of Cieńka Malwa known as “Wisoło”.

Saperki is a female sports team which practices artistic canoeing, and artistic sports in general, popularizing the idea of SZport – mixing the art [Pl: sztuka] and sport. The team was established by the artists from Opole in order to become fit enough to reach the European Capital of Culture with the help of their own muscles. After five days of travelling along the Odra Water Track, they reached the minesweepers’ firing range in Kozanów. The artists are preparing to develop their project for the opening of the exhibition Kozanów - In Search for the Miraculous. The team members are: Elżbieta Bon Ton, Anna Cięciwa Gądek, Olimpia Janik, Bojka Wodnicka, Cieńka Malwa „Wiosło”, Maria Syrena Bitka „Syreni”, Natalia Ka as Krawczyk „Kajakh” and Magdalena „Raniuszek” Hlawacz.

Ales Pushkin – is one of the most famous Belarussian artists. In his controversial ironic works he undermines the political situation of his country. He was arrested many times during his artistic performances. In 1999 he organized a happening to celebrate a formal termination of the first tenure of Aleksandr Łukaszenka, delivering a wheelbarrow of dung at the seat of the president, with a note saying: „for President Łukaszenka“, for which he was punished with a fine and imprisonment. On the 60th anniversary of the takeover of Belarus by the Soviet army in 1944, he made an exhibition of portraits of Belarussian nationalists considered by the authorities to be collaborators with the Third Reich, which he presented in front of the entrance to the National Art Museum. Since 1991 he has been living in his family town Bobr in the Krupki Raion. On the roof of his house he regularly hangs a traditional white-red-white flag of Belarus. In 2000 he became a protagonist of a scandal when he painted a fresco of the Last Judgement in the Bobr Orthodox Church, in which he portrayed Aleksandr Łukaszenka and Patriarch Filaret surrounded by devils and sinners. He is also a protagonist of a film called "Białoruski walc" [Belarussian waltz] made by Andrzej Fidyk in 2007.

Jiří Kovanda - a Czech conceptual artist. Lives and works in Prague. He is the most renowned contemporary Czech artist, a pioneer of neo-avant-garde conceptual art, considered a legend of visual culture of the Mid and Eastern Europe. Since mid 1970s Kovanda’s actions, art projects and installations have been realized mainly in public spaces and presented as photo documentations during exhibitions. They represent the effort and determination with which the artist overcomes social borders. Since 1970s his art has been accompanied by silence and illusion of complete lack of movement, so rare in the contemporary art.
